Cruise Ship Capsized 2016

Ten Years Since the Costa Concordia Tragedy

The Survivors' Journey

Ten years have passed since the tragic sinking of the Costa Concordia, a luxury cruise liner that capsized off the coast of Isola del Giglio, Italy, in 2012. The disaster, which claimed the lives of 32 people, left a lasting mark on the survivors and the island community.

One of those survivors is Cristina Moretti, who was just 18 years old at the time of the accident. Moretti, who escaped from the ship with her family, recalls the chaotic and terrifying moments leading up to the sinking.

Salvage and Recovery

Following the sinking, the Costa Concordia remained partially submerged in the waters off Giglio for two years. In 2014, a massive salvage operation, known as the "largest maritime salvage operation in history," was undertaken to remove the wreck from the seabed.

The operation, which involved a team of over 500 engineers and divers, took over a year to complete. The salvaged ship was then towed to Genoa, Italy, where it was scrapped.

Legacy and Impact

The Costa Concordia disaster cast a long shadow over the island of Giglio, which was home to just over 1,400 people at the time of the sinking. The tragedy had a profound impact on the community, both in terms of tourism and its emotional toll.
